01. Site Survey & Client Requirements
The pool sits in a narrow rear courtyard between the villa facade and a white perimeter wall. The site geometry imposed different mounting heights on each side and limited the available clearance below the first-floor windows.
- Courtyard clear width: 4,720 mm between the villa and the boundary wall.
- Boundary wall height: 1,720 mm.
- First-floor window-sill datum: 2,180 mm, limiting the maximum high-side mounting height.
- Pool terrace length: approximately 11.8 m, with a 2,840 mm end terrace.
- Client objective: rapid conversion between fully enclosed weather protection and open-air swimming.
02. Conceptual Design & 3D BIM Modelling
SUNRAY developed a six-bay asymmetrical single-slope telescopic enclosure tailored to the courtyard constraints.
2.1 Asymmetrical Single-Slope Geometry
The roof is mounted at 2,100 mm along the villa facade and slopes across the 4,720 mm courtyard to a 1,840 mm structural height above the 1,720 mm boundary wall. This keeps the system below the first-floor window sill and directs rainwater away from the house.
2.2 Bi-Parting 3+3 Telescopic Movement
The six modules split at the center: three retract toward one end and three toward the opposite end, creating a large open-sky pool area during good weather.
2.3 Enclosed and Open-Air Modes
When deployed, the full 11.8 m enclosure protects the pool from rain, wind and debris. When retracted, the modules park over the end zones so the pool can function as an open-air Mediterranean terrace.
03. Shop Drawings & Dimensional Coordination
Approved production drawings established the track baseline, module count, wall-to-wall span and asymmetric elevation heights before fabrication.
- Total track baseline: 12,080 mm
- Retractable coverage span: 11,800 mm
- Track margins: 280 mm at each end
- Module count: 6 cascading telescopic bays
- Opening logic: 3 sliding left + 3 sliding right
- Courtyard clear span: 4,720 mm
- Overall frame width: 5,000 mm
- High-side mounting height: 2,100 mm
- Low-side structural height: 1,840 mm
- Low-side wall base height: 1,720 mm
- Continuous cross-slope for rainwater drainage
04. Precision Manufacturing & Factory Quality Control
Manufacturing focused on accurate multi-track profiles, drainage paths, roller interfaces and durable outdoor finishing.
4.1 Multi-Cavity Guide Tracks & Structural Profiles
The source documents heavy-gauge 6063-T6 aluminum floor tracks, wall ledgers and sliding frame profiles with multi-chamber internal ribs and integrated drainage channels.
4.2 CNC Machining
Automated machining was used for mounting pockets, roller channels and drainage slots required by the telescopic system.
4.3 Dark Charcoal Architectural Finish
The aluminum components received a dark charcoal fluorocarbon finish selected for strong Mediterranean sun, thermal cycling and poolside exposure.
05. 1:1 Factory Trial Pre-Assembly & Kinematic Testing
Before export, SUNRAY completed a full-scale trial assembly and movement test of the retractable system.
5.1 Track Alignment & Six-Module Nesting
- The 12.08 m baseline was checked for track parallelism and diagonal squareness.
- All six modules were tested for smooth cascading movement without profile interference.
- Module overlaps and nesting clearances were checked across both retraction directions.
5.2 Motor Synchronization & Weather Seals
- Electric drive units were cycled repeatedly for synchronized opening and closing.
- The source records an opening / closing cycle of approximately two minutes.
- EPDM sweep seals were checked along the overlapping module interfaces.
06. Export Packaging & Container Logistics
After factory testing, the modules, guide tracks and polycarbonate components were protected for ocean shipment to Spain.
- Aluminum extrusions were wrapped with foam and protective film.
- Disassembled modules and glazing components were packed into reinforced export plywood crates.
- Crates were secured for containerized shipment to Spain.
07. On-Site Installation in Spain
After delivery, the enclosure was assembled between the villa facade and the boundary wall using the prepared asymmetric mounting heights.
7.1 High-Side and Low-Side Track Installation
The 2,100 mm high-side ledger was fixed to the villa facade while the opposing low-side guide system was aligned along the 1,720 mm boundary wall.
7.2 Module Assembly & Polycarbonate Installation
The six prefabricated modules were assembled on the guide tracks and fitted with the UV-resistant polycarbonate panels.
7.3 Motor Drive Wiring & Calibration
The electric drive units were connected to the control system and calibrated for smooth center-split operation by remote control.
08. Final Handover & Residential Use
The completed retractable enclosure gives the homeowner a convertible pool environment that can switch between weather protection and open-air use.
- All-weather protection: The closed structure shelters the pool from rain, wind and debris.
- Fast conversion: The motorized system changes between enclosed and open configurations in approximately two minutes.
- Open-sky swimming: The 3+3 bi-parting modules clear most or all of the pool area when retracted.
- Solar and UV strategy: Polycarbonate glazing supports daylight while the source specifies double-sided UV protection.
- Site-specific fit: The asymmetric roof profile resolves the height difference between the villa facade and low boundary wall.
09. Application Scenarios
The same asymmetrical retractable enclosure concept can be adapted to constrained residential and hospitality pool sites where the two support sides have different heights.
- Courtyard pools between a building facade and boundary wall
- Mediterranean and coastal villa pools
- Residential pools requiring rapid storm protection
- Hospitality pools needing convertible enclosed / open-air operation
